\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Last week\u2019s discussion on poverty provoked a lot of thoughtful\r\ncomments.\u00a0 <\/span>Today\u2019s sit-down ought to do\r\nmore of the same.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me begin today\u2019s\r\nsharing with some personal experiences.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Back\r\nwhen Della and I were living in Anchorage, we were making good money \u2013 really\r\ngood money!\u00a0 <\/span>Della was the manager of the\r\nlargest Zale jewelry store in the state and acting assistant regional manager,\r\ntaking oversight for 13 other stores.\u00a0 <\/span>I\r\nwas Chief Engineer for the FOX television station.\u00a0 <\/span>I also had a newspaper distribution business\r\non the side taking care of several paper routes for the Anchorage Daily\r\nNews.\u00a0 <\/span>My newspaper business earned me\r\nmore money than my engineering position \u2013 and that was no small potatoes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nday the Lord says to us \u2013 both of us \u2013 \u201cSimplify.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Next day He says, \u201cConsolidate.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Next day He says, \u201cGet out of debt.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Next day He says, \u201cBecome mobile.\u00a0 <\/span>Be ready to go where I send you at a moment\u2019s\r\nnotice.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Whewww!!\u00a0 <\/span>Get the picture?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cSell all thou hast,\r\nand come and follow me.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That was the\r\nessence of what He was saying to us.\u00a0 <\/span>He\r\njust took a different way to say the same thing.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nI did what lots of other folks try to do.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Interpret.<\/o:p><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Yup!\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m not sure what it is about human nature\r\nthat figures it has to \u201cinterpret\u201d what God says when He says it so clearly,\r\nbut that\u2019s what often happens.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Here\r\nwas my interpretation.\u00a0 <\/span>Start\r\ndownsizing.\u00a0 <\/span>Get out of the six-bedroom\r\nhome.\u00a0 <\/span>We didn\u2019t need that big a place\r\nanymore, anyway.\u00a0 <\/span>Except for Rebekah and\r\nJoshua, all of our kids were grown and gone from home.\u00a0 <\/span>So we found a four-bedroom house out in the\r\ncountry, about fifty miles north of Anchorage.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We figured (I figured!) we could move our household goods \u2013 what we\r\nneeded to keep \u2013 out to that house, put things in storage, and get ready to\r\nroll.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Hmmmmmm\u2026\u2026.\u00a0 <\/span>Not quite what the Lord said, was it?\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord has a funny sense of humor, though,\r\nwhen you are making an effort \u2013 even if it is a screwed-up effort \u2013 to be\r\nobedient.\u00a0 <\/span>OK, we can solve this problem\r\neasy!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Bang!\u00a0 <\/span>Smash!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Thud!\u00a0 <\/span>Know what all that noise\r\nis?\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s us in a head-on collision\r\nwith our almost brand new Chevy Lumina.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>A drunk pulls directly into our path a couple car lengths in front of us\r\nwhen we\u2019re going 50 miles an hour. \u00a0<\/span>Know\r\nwhat?\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s not a fun way to come to a\r\nstop!\u00a0 <\/span>Our van was that new kind of\r\nconstruction, though, that allows the front-end to collapse and protect the\r\npassengers.\u00a0 <\/span>We walked away without a\r\nscratch.\u00a0 <\/span>Our van was totaled.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Know\r\nwhat else?\u00a0 <\/span>The drunk\u2019s pickup was\r\nliterally airborne and thrown into a telephone pole.\u00a0 <\/span>He got out and ran away from the scene.\u00a0 <\/span>Even though we identified the driver as being\r\nthe owner, because he wasn\u2019t present at the scene and an hour later claimed his\r\npickup had been stolen, he got off scot-free.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>His insurance wouldn\u2019t pay for it.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Stupid me, I hadn\u2019t made my primary insurance payment, and my policy had\r\nlapsed the day before the accident.\u00a0 <\/span>I\r\ndid have another policy that paid off the van, but wouldn\u2019t replace it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Presto.\u00a0 <\/span>No more van.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>No more payments.\u00a0 <\/span>No more\r\ninsurance payments.\u00a0 <\/span>And no way for us to\r\nmove our stuff out into the country.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nhad to pass on buying the country home.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We couldn\u2019t afford to buy it and a new vehicle at the same time. \u00a0<\/span>Yup.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>You heard that right.\u00a0 <\/span>We were so\r\ntaxed financially making all that money we couldn\u2019t afford to do anything.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

See.\u00a0 <\/span>The Lord was trying to teach us more than, <\/span>\u201cSell\r\nall thou hast.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He was getting ready to teach us some\r\nfundamentals of prosperity and deliver us from a poverty mindset.\u00a0 <\/span>Hate to say it, but I sure was slow to get\r\ndeliverance!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nI rented one of those storage lockers.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Paid a hundred bucks a month to store everything I didn\u2019t give to our\r\nkids or sell in a garage sale.\u00a0 <\/span>What a\r\nwaste!\u00a0 <\/span>I shoulda listened to exactly<\/u>\r\nwhat the Lord was saying!\u00a0 <\/span>We (I) hung on\r\nto stuff that was really necessary for our future plans.\u00a0 <\/span>Know what I mean?\u00a0 <\/span>And if you believe that, I\u2019ve got a bridge\r\nfor sale.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Over\r\nthe next four years, I wound up paying out nearly $5 grand in storage fees for\r\nstuff that rusted, molded or became obsolete and had to be given or thrown\r\naway.\u00a0 <\/span>What a waste!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\ngot rid of the six-bedroom house.\u00a0 <\/span>I\r\nresigned my engineering position.\u00a0 <\/span>Della\r\nresigned from Zales, and I sweated little green apples letting go of my\r\nnewspaper business.\u00a0 <\/span>\u2018S\u2019funny<\/span>\r\nisn\u2019t it.\u00a0 <\/span>How we attach so much\r\nimportance to things, to positions, to jobs, to businesses that ultimately mean\r\nnothing in God\u2019s scheme of things!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\u2019ve\r\nalready shared with you in a previous discussion, our meeting Earle and Marcia,\r\nand how they offered us their ranch in Idaho as a place to go and establish a\r\nbase of operations for ministry.\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s\r\nwhere we headed.\u00a0 <\/span>Overnight we went from\r\n$10 grand plus per month in income down to a guaranteed 200 bucks.\u00a0 <\/span>You know what the guaranteed 200 bucks\r\nwere?\u00a0 <\/span>The tithe from a faithful lady in\r\nCanada who had retired from teaching.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

We\r\nlived better on those $200 than we had ever lived on the $10,000+.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t try to do the math.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019ll go crazy.\u00a0 <\/span>But that\u2019s the way it works when you obey the\r\nLord.\u00a0 <\/span>When we arrived at the ranch, we\r\nstill had some $14,000 in unpaid bills left from Alaska.\u00a0 <\/span>I can\u2019t tell you to this day how it all\r\nhappened, but during the course of the next year we got out of debt.\u00a0 <\/span>Completely.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

I\r\ndon\u2019t have the time in this article to tell you of all the adventures we had,\r\nbut we started giving away everything.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Mostly, we gave ourselves.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\ndidn\u2019t have lots of money \u2013 of course \u2013 but we did have our skills, our\r\nabilities, our talents.\u00a0 <\/span>And we gave those\r\naway. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Somehow,\r\nthere was always money to travel.\u00a0 <\/span>And we\r\ndid.\u00a0 <\/span>We traveled throughout the\r\nnorthwest and Canada and across the northern tier states, helping folks who\r\nneeded help.\u00a0 <\/span>We chinked logs for a\r\nmassive log home that belonged to some friends in Cochrane, Alberta.\u00a0 <\/span>We painted the outside and inside of a large\r\nhome for some other friends in Red Deer.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>We laid linoleum in Atlin, BC.\u00a0 <\/span>We\r\nplumbed a house in Spokane.\u00a0 <\/span>We tore out\r\nthe old bathroom at the ranch house in Idaho and built a new, modern bathroom\r\nwith a heated floor.\u00a0 <\/span>We repaired and\r\nrebuilt another bathroom in Liberty Lake.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>And on and on.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nwe began to learn a whole different side of prosperity.\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t that we didn\u2019t have hearts to\r\ngive.\u00a0 <\/span>We did.\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019d always been givers.\u00a0 <\/span>But we gave from our wealth \u2013 not from our\r\nneed.\u00a0 <\/span>Remember the widow\u2019s mite \u2013 that\r\ndinky little coin worth less than a cent \u2013 that was worth more than all the\r\nwealth the rich men were dropping into the offering boxes?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s\r\nall a matter of perspective.\u00a0 <\/span>Where are you\r\ngiving from: your wealth, or your need?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Prosperity\r\n(and I said this last week) begins in how and whether we apply the principle\r\nthat Jesus taught, <\/span>\u201cGive, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed\r\ndown, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.\r\nFor with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you\r\nagain.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Della\r\nand I learned that the more you give, the more you receive.\u00a0 <\/span>We gave and gave and gave.\u00a0 <\/span>And we received, and received, and received. \u00a0<\/span>Understand that we weren\u2019t receiving lots of\r\nmoney at the time, but we sure were receiving a greater measure of the\r\npersonal, living presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, we did receive money.\u00a0 <\/span>Plenty of it.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Not enough to get rich \u2013 financially, that is \u2013 but plenty to meet our\r\nneeds.\u00a0 <\/span>We lived better, and ate better,\r\nand drove better than we ever had before.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

It\u2019s\r\na funny thing, though.\u00a0 <\/span>We still didn\u2019t\r\nhave a home to call our own.\u00a0 <\/span>We moved\r\nabout from place to place \u2013 even though the ranch was still \u201chome.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>We just didn\u2019t own it.\u00a0 <\/span>Pretty soon, Earle and Marcia returned to the\r\nranch from Alaska, and all of us were living there.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

And\r\nit really didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 <\/span>Our frame of\r\nreference was changing.\u00a0 <\/span>We still didn\u2019t\r\nhave much in terms of this world\u2019s goods, but we were richer than we\u2019d ever\r\nbeen.\u00a0 <\/span>And we were out of debt.\u00a0 <\/span>We didn\u2019t owe a red cent to anyone.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Prosperity\r\nbegins in the mind.\u00a0 <\/span>Think I said that\r\nbefore.\u00a0 <\/span>It begins in one\u2019s spirit.\u00a0 <\/span>It begins in giving.\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s a whole lot more to it, though, and I\r\ncan see that I\u2019m not even going to scratch the surface today.\u00a0 <\/span>Looks like this is going to have to be a\r\ntwo-parter.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u201cSell\r\nall thou hast\u201d has a lot more implications than initially meet the eye.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s not just getting rid of stuff.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s getting rid of the \u201cstuff mindset.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s getting rid of the way you think, the\r\nway you reason, the way you plot and scheme to acquire things so you won\u2019t have\r\nneeds, the way you think life ought to be lived, the way you think God wants\r\nyou to live.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

OOOOPPPS!!\u00a0 <\/span>Did I say that?\u00a0 <\/span>It sounds like I\u2019m saying that <\/span>\u201csell\r\nall thou hast\u201d <\/span>means\r\ngetting rid of rational thinking.\u00a0 <\/span>You\u2019re\r\nright!\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s what I said.\u00a0 <\/span>And that\u2019s what I mean.\u00a0 <\/span>Exactly!\u00a0\r\n<\/span>God doesn\u2019t need your logic to prosper you.\u00a0 <\/span>God doesn\u2019t need your rationalizing of\r\nanything to bless you.\u00a0 <\/span>He needs your\r\nsimple, unqualified, uncompromised obedience.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>No matter how illogical it may seem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

True\r\nprosperity comes with obedience to all that God commands of you \u2013 logic or no\r\nlogic.\u00a0 <\/span>True prosperity comes with\r\nfollowing some fundamental principles the Lord has laid down for us to follow.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Some\r\nof the richest people I\u2019ve ever known have more money than you\u2019d spend in your\r\nlifetime.\u00a0 <\/span>And\u2026...some of the richest\r\npeople I\u2019ve known have very little money in the bank, or financial assets of\r\nany kind.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

By\r\nthe same token, some of the poorest people I\u2019ve known have so much money you\u2019d\r\nnever be able to spend it.\u00a0 <\/span>And\u2026..some of\r\nthe poorest people I\u2019ve known seem to have it all together.\u00a0 <\/span>They have friends, they have position, they\r\nhave power (or think they do), they have status in life and academic\r\nrecognition.\u00a0 <\/span>And they have nothing!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

As\r\nI\u2019ve said many times, prosperity is not having lots of money, owning properties\r\nand expensive cars, and having Blue Cross\/Blue Shield.\u00a0 <\/span>Prosperity isn\u2019t having power, position or\r\nbeing the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Prosperity\r\nisn\u2019t even happiness.\u00a0 <\/span>Happiness will\r\ncome with true prosperity, but happiness is a state of mind \u2013 not a state of\r\nbeing.\u00a0 <\/span>So, let\u2019s talk about what\r\nprosperity really is.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Like\r\nI said.\u00a0 <\/span>Happiness is a state of\r\nmind.\u00a0 <\/span>Joy is a state of one\u2019s\r\nspirit.\u00a0 <\/span>We are triune beings, created in\r\nthe image of God.\u00a0 <\/span>We function first and\r\nforemost in our spirits, then our minds or our souls, and finally with some\r\naction in our bodies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Lots\r\nof folks try to prosper by just \u201cthinking\u201d it, then following their \u201cthink\u201d\r\nwith some action.\u00a0 <\/span>That works better than\r\n\u201cthinking\u201d poor, but unless prosperity begins in one\u2019s spirit, one doesn\u2019t have\r\ntheir entire being \u201cin agreement.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Let\u2019s\r\ntalk a principle for a minute.\u00a0 <\/span>In John\u2019s\r\nthird epistle to the body of Christ, he writes, <\/span>\u201cBeloved, I\r\nwish above all things that thou mayest prosper <\/span>(<\/span>euodoo<\/span><\/i><\/b>) <\/span>and\r\nbe in health, even as thy soul prospers<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Lots of folks think that phrase \u201cmayest prosper and be in health\u201d applies\r\nstrictly to one\u2019s spiritual state of affairs.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Huh\r\nUh!\u00a0 <\/span>Nope.\u00a0 <\/span>That Greek word, <\/span>euodoo<\/span><\/i><\/b>, translates\r\nliterally to \u201chelp on the road,\u201d but is used metaphorically of \u201csucceeding in\r\nbusiness and economic affairs.\u201d\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Prospering.\u00a0 <\/span>Doing well.\u00a0 <\/span>Making it financially.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

So\r\nmuch for the phony baloney that it is God\u2019s will for folks to be poor and live\r\nin poverty.\u00a0 <\/span>That really is a demonic\r\ndoctrine that has populated the church world.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

When\r\nyou grow up in church like I did, you hear just about every teaching conceivable\r\n\u2013 much of it coming from folks who either don\u2019t really know the Lord, or just\r\ndon\u2019t know His heart\u2019s desire.\u00a0 <\/span>As a\r\nresult, they draw silly conclusions by looking at the way Jesus lived and think\r\nthat\u2019s the way we\u2019re supposed to live.\u00a0\r\n<\/span>Humility equates to \u201cpoor.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

One\r\nof the most misunderstood statements Jesus made is, <\/span>\u201cFoxes\r\nhave holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where\r\nto lay his head.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>People read that\r\nand think, Jesus must not have had a home to live in.\u00a0 <\/span>He was a street person<\/i>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

What\r\nHe really meant was that His home was not of this world \u2013 that while engaged in\r\nthis ministry that changed the face of the globe, He neither had the time nor\r\nthe inclination to waste what few years He had on living in the lap of luxury,\r\ngoing home and sleeping in a nice bed, satisfying his creature comforts.\u00a0 <\/span>He could have, you know.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nwasn\u2019t poor.\u00a0 <\/span>He had enormous wealth at\r\nHis disposal.\u00a0 <\/span>He chose, instead, to take\r\nevery available moment investing Himself in the eternal investment that would\r\nultimately pay the dividends that would bring Him a yield of folks with whom he\r\ncould fellowship as His co-equals.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Jesus\r\nwas sacrificing the ease of His flesh for a spiritual return that would last\r\nfor eternity.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, as He began his three\r\nand a half years of ministry, He said, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
